Self-driving slippers park themselves at the push of a button

Automakers have been working on self-driving cars for years. Now they’re using autonomous technology to make household objects move on their own.　From self-lacing sneakers to chairs that park themselves at desks, high-tech conveniences have arrived to eliminate the minutest hassles of everyday life.

And now Nissan has unveiled wheeled slippers that — no matter where you leave them — glide across the floor and park themselves at a designated location at the push of a button.

Along with self-parking tables, cushions, and remotes, the slippers are available only at the ProPILOT Park Ryokan, a pop-up hotel in Hakone, Japan.

Wheels emerge to roll the slippers back into their resting positions. The slippers’ self-parking technology is based on the system in the Nissan Leaf electric car. Unlike the car, however, the slippers can only move back into pre-programmed resting spots when the wall-mounted button is pushed.

The slippers are worn normally. But once they’re taken off, a press of the button deploys a set of motorized wheels and sends the slippers back to their resting spot.

ボタン一つで整頓、自動運転スリッパ

自動車メーカーは自動操縦車の開発に数年も取り組んできている。いま、その自律操縦技術を生活用品の自動化に適用しようとしている。

自動紐結びスニーカーから机に自動できれいに並ぶ机まで、便利な技術は毎日の些細な面倒を解消してくれるところまできた。

そしていま、日産は車輪付きスリッパを発表した。ボタン一つで床のどこにおいても指定の場所に戻ってくるという。

箱根にあるプロパイロット・パーク旅館限定で、この自動スリッパに加え、自動テーブル、クッション、リモコンを実体験することが出来る。

スリッパの自動運転技術は、日産の電気自動車「LEAF」をもとにしているが、車とは違いボタンが押されると指定の場所に戻ることしかできない。

スリッパは普通に着用でき、脱いだ後にボタンを押すことでモーター式の車輪が作動し元の場所へ戻る仕組みだ。

Monaco running out of space for millionaires

The tiny city-state of Monaco on France’s Mediterranean coastline is having problems finding space for rich people. Monaco is less than 2 square kilometers in size and has some of the richest people in the world living there. It is called the playground of the rich and is home to a Formula 1 Grand Prix,

The country is running out of space for more millionaires. House prices are already the highest in the world, with an average price of around $100,000 per square meter. City planners say an estimated 2,700 more millionaires are hoping to move there in the next 10 years.

Monaco’s ruler, Prince Albert II, has decided to build more homes in Monaco. He wants to reclaim land from the sea.

He has OK’d a $2.1 billion project to fill in 15 acres of the sea with concrete and sand. The project will have a harbor big enough for 30 ships, a landscaped park, a Japanese garden and 120 new waterfront homes for the rich and famous.

There will be a huge demand for the new homes. People are attracted by the luxury lifestyle and no income tax. Marine experts are worried the construction will cause great damage to sea life and the environment.

モナコ、大金持ちへの土地不足

フランスの地中海沿岸にある小さな都市国家であるモナコは、大金持ちのための土地確保の困難に直面している。モナコは2平方キロメートル以下の小ささで、世界有数の大金持ちが居住し、フォーミュラー1グランプリ、有名なカジノ、贅沢なヨットが並ぶハーバーがあり、金持ちの遊び場と呼ばれている。3万8千人の人口のうち30％は大金持ちで、更に大金持ちを受け入れるだけのスペースが限られてきている。住宅価格は既に世界一で、1平方メートルの相場は10万ドル（約1000万円）である。都市開発者は、これからの10年間で2700人ほどの大金持ちが移住を求めているという。

モナコのアルバート2世王子は家を増設することを決め、海の埋め立てを計画している。

アルバート2世王子は既に21億ドル（約2200億円）規模の15エーカーの海をのコンクリートと砂で埋め立るプロジェクトに「go」サインを出した。計画では30の船を許容できるだけの巨大な港、デザイン公園、日本庭園と海岸沿いに120戸の家が含まれる。（りっちアンドふぇいますのため）。新しい家の需要は特に大きく、贅沢な生活と所得税免除に誘引される。海洋学のエキスパートは埋め立てが環境と海洋生物に大きな打撃を与えるのではと懸念している。王子は環境に憂慮しており、重要な種は人口岩礁に移されるという。

like-minded 　「気の合う」
　You’re most likely to find a like-minded person in the places you already go: the grocery store, gym, church or synagogue. 　
 

「気の合う人が見つかる可能性が最も高いのは、あなたがすでに行っている場所、例えば食料雑貨店、スポーツジム、教会、シナゴーグ（ユダヤ教の礼拝堂）などだ」」
  ～-mindedは「～という心の、～志向の、～に熱心な」という意味で、「～」には形容詞が置かれ複合語を作る。従って、like「似たような、同類の」と結びついた、like-mindedは「同じ考え・好み・趣味などを持った、気の合う」という意味になる。
　この他にも～-mindedを用いた語には、absent-minded「上の空の」、single-minded「ひたむきな」、broad/open-minded「心の広い」、narrow-minded「心の狭い」、career-minded「キャリア志向の」、future-minded「未来志向の」などたくさんある。
 
baggy 「だぶだぶの」
This means no baggy sweats. No dirty ponytails or greasy ball caps.
 

「つまり、だぶだぶのスウェットパンツ、雑にまとめたポニーテール、薄汚れたキャップなどで外出するのはNGである」
  baggyは「（衣類などが）ぶかぶかの／だぶだぶの」という意味。他にも、I saw an famous actress wearing sneakers and baggy jeans at a coffee shop.「コーヒーショップで、スニーカーにだぶだぶのジーンズをはいている有名女優を見かけた」、This sweater is too baggy and doesn’t look stylish at all.「このセーターはぶかぶか過ぎて、全然おしゃれに見えない」のように使う。
　また、baggyには「（目などが）腫れぼったい、（皮膚が）たるんで」という意味もある。例えば、Do you know how to cure baggyeyes?「腫れぼったい目の治し方を知っている？」、I have baggy skin because of excessive weight loss.「急激な減量で肌がたるんでいる」のようになる。
　ちなみに、「目の下のたるみ、隈」を意味する語としてはbagをよく使う。例えば、She had huge bags under her eyes from lack of sleep yesterday.「彼女は昨日睡眠不足で目の下の隈がすごかった」のようになる。
 
ビシネス英会話 skimpy 「肌の露出が多い」
Triathlons attract fit people, wearing skimpy clothes, high on endorphins, with their age marked in large numbers on their leg.
  「トライアスロンには健康的な人が集まってくる。そうした人々は肌の露出が多く、エンドルフィンが大量に分泌されており、足を見ればだいたいの年齢がわかる」
  skimpyは「（衣類が）肌の露出度が高い」という意味。他にも、The 25-year-old pop star has been seen wearing skimpy outfits and partying heavily.「25歳のポップスターは、露出度の高い衣装を着て、派手に遊びまわっているところを見られている」のように使う。outfitは「衣装一式、いでたち」、partyは「パーティへ出かける、派手に遊びまわる」。
　なお、skimpyは、scanty、revealingなどに置き換えることができる。

Just making a question…

There was a blonde who found herself sitting next to a lawyer on an airplane. The lawyer just kept bugging the blonde wanting her to play a game of intelligence.

Finally, the lawyer offered her 10 to 1 odds, and said every time the blonde could not answer one of his questions, she owed him $5, but every time he could not answer hers, he’d give her $50. The lawyer figured he could not lose, and the blonde reluctantly accepted.

The lawyer first asked, “What is the distance between the Earth and the nearest star?”

Without saying a word the blonde handed him $5. then the blonde asked, “What goes up a hill with 3 legs and comes back down the hill with 4 legs?”

Well, the lawyer looked puzzled. He took several hours, looking up everything he could on his laptop and even placing numerous air-to-ground phone calls trying to find the answer. Finally, angry and frustrated, he gave up and paid the blonde $50.

The blonde put the $50 into her purse without comment, but the lawyer insisted, “What is the answer to your question?”

Without saying a word, the blonde handed him $5.
