Massive diamond cache hiding in Earth

There’s a load of bling buried in the Earth. U.S. researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported that more than a quadrillion tons of diamonds— that‘s a thousand trillion tons — are hidden in the Earth’s interior.

But don’t expect a diamond rush. These naturally occurring precious minerals are located far deeper than any drilling expedition has ever reached: about 145 to 240 kilometers below the surface of our planet.

“We can’t get at them, but still, there is much more diamond there than we have ever thought before.” Said a research scientist in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary sciences.

“The car does not move without singing,” Uusipere said.

　地球には莫大な量のダイヤが埋まっている。MITの米国研究者たちが1000兆トン以上のダイヤが地球内部に秘められていると発表した。

　ダイヤモンドラッシュは望めそうにない。この天然鉱石はこれまでのどの採掘活動が到達した地点よりも遥か深くに位置しているからだ。およそ地下145～240キロ。

　そのダイヤに手を付けることは出来ない。ただ、我々のこれまでの考えを絶するダイヤが存在する、と地球大気惑星科学科の研究者が述べた。

Men in Japan turn to parasols to ward off heat

Parasols— accessories normally associated with women trying to protect their skin from the sun— are proving increasingly popular with men as the nation grapples with one of its hottest summers ever.

Parasols have been attracting attention in recent years, but this summer, sales of models targeted at men have grown rapidly amid the scorching heat, store officials said.

At the men’s branch of Isetan’s flagship department store in Shinjuku ward, Tokyo, parasol sales more than doubled in June and July compared with a year earlier, with foldable, all-weather types especially popular.

日本人男子、暑さ対策に日傘を

日傘は、通常女性の日焼け予防のイメージが強いアイテムであるが、日本人男性の間でも密かに人気が上昇してきている。かつてないほどの夏の暑さへ対処法としてだ。

ここ数年でも日傘は注目を集めてきてはいたが、男性用のモデルの売り上げは猛暑のさなか急激な伸びを見せた、と関係者は話した。

新宿区にある伊勢丹トップの新宿店の一角である伊勢丹メンズでは、日傘の6月、7月の売り上げは昨年の同時期の2倍以上に跳ね上がった。折りたたみ式、全天候型が特に人気だという。

「世界の歴史でもまれに見る急激な経済発展の最中、生産年齢の男性たちは長生きすることの難しさを痛感してきた」
  economic boomは「好況、経済発展」という意味。boomのみでも可。同義語には、prosperous、flourishing、thriving「（形容詞）繁栄する、繁盛する」などがある。反意語は、economic crisis 「経済危機」、recession「（比較的短期の）不況」、depression「（比較的長期の）不況」、slump、downturn、stagnation「不況、不景気、停滞」、dull、sluggish「不景気な」などたくさんある。なお、「景気循環」はbusiness cycleと言う。
　have trouble ～ingは「～するのに苦労する」、stay aliveは「生き続ける」。
 
male-dominated society　「男社会」
The pressure to perform and accumulate wealth in a male-dominated society adds to the health issues.
 

「男性社会でしっかりと働いて蓄財しなければならないというプレッシャーは健康問題を増大させる」
 

male-dominatedは「男性が支配して」という意味なので、male-dominated societyは「男社会、男尊女卑の社会」になる。この他、male-dominated profession「男性優位な職業」、male-dominated world of journalism「男中心のジャーナリズムの世界」、male-dominated subject「主に男子学生が履修する科目」などのように使うことができる。 accumulate wealthは「蓄財する」。
 
ビシネス英会話 flip side 「別の一面→逆」
The flip side, however is also true.
 

　「とはいえ、逆もまた真なりだ」
  　flip sideは「（音楽の）レコードのB面、裏の面、（何かの）異なる一面」という意味。他にも、The flip side of the weaker pound is to make exports more competitive.「ポンド安の逆の一面は、輸出をより競争力のあるものにすることだ」、The movie reveals the flip side of Michael Jackson.「この映画はマイケル・ジャクソンの異なる一面を明らかにしている」のように使う。また、on the flip side「逆に、他方では」、on the flip side of the coin「裏を返せば」という決まった表現もある。

Marriage counceling

A husband and wife go to a counselor after 15 years of marriage.

The counselor asks them what the problem is and the wife goes into a tirade listing every problem they have ever had in the 15 years they’ve been married. She goes on and on and on.

Finally, the counselor gets up, walks around the desk, embraces the wife and kisses her passionately. The woman shuts up and sits quietly in a daze.

The counselor turns to the husband and says, “This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?”

The husband thinks for a moment and replies, “Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish.”
