French Investor crosses English Channel on jet-powered hoverboard

French investor Franky Zapata crossed the English Channel on Aug.4 on a jet-powered hoverboard he designed, zooming over the Strait of Dover in just over 20 minutes.
It was his second attempt. When he tried in July, turbulence knocked him into the sea.

Early on Aug. 4 Zapata took off from Sangatte in northern France. His hoverboard had five small jet engines, and he carried fuel in a backpack.

The investor landed on a boat to refuel at the halfway point. He completed the 35-km crossing in Saint Margaret’s Bay, close to Dover on Britain’s southern coast.

“For the last 5 to 6 kilometers I just really enjoyed it,” Zapata told reporters. “We made a machine three years ago… and now we’ve crossed the Channel, it’s crazy,” he said, before breaking into tears.

The French Army gave Zapata 1.3 million Euros (155 million yen) in late 2018 to help develop the hoverboard.

ホバーボードでドーバー海峡横断

フランスの発明家フランキー・ザパタ氏は8月4日、自身が設計したジェットエンジンの「ホバーボード」で英仏海峡を横断し、20分余りでドーバー海峡を高速で進んだ。

これは彼の2度目の挑戦だった。7月に挑戦したときは、気象による揺れで海に落ちた。8月4日の早く、ザパタ氏はフランス北部のサンガットを離陸した。

彼のホバーボードは5台の小型ジェットエンジンを搭載し、彼がリュックサックで燃料を運んだ。

この発明家は中間地点で燃料を補給するため、ボートに乗った。

35キロの横断を終え、イギリス南部の沿岸にあるドーバーに近いセント・マーガレッツ・ベイに着陸した。

「最後の5～6キロは本当にただ楽しんでいた」とザパタ氏は報道陣に語った。「我々は3年前にこの機械を作った…そして今、海峡を渡った、素晴らしい」と、彼は話し、わっと泣き出した。

Tokyo traffic congestion tests fail

Two tests to control traffic congestion on Tokyo’s Metropolitan Expressway during the 2020 Olympic Games failed to meet their targets, the Land ministry has said.

The tests were aimed at finding ways to achieve a 30% reduction in traffic volume, and at one point some 30 entry points to the expressway were closed. Experts believe that traffic congestion could double during the games.

However, the July 24 test saw traffic fall just 7.3% and the test on July 26 saw a 6.8% drop, the ministry said.

東京、渋滞テスト失敗

東京の首都高速道路で2020年東京オリンピック中の交通渋滞を緩和する２つのテストは目標に達することができなかったと、国土交通省が明らかにした。

このテストは、交通量の３割減を達成する方法を見出すことを目指し、一時は首都高への約30ヵ所の入り口が閉鎖された。

しかし、７月24日のテストでは交通量はわずか7.3％しか減少せず、７月26日（金曜日）のテストでは6.8％しか減らなかったと、同省は述べた。

Raise the bar「水準を引き上げる」
The iPhone raised the bar for smartphone makers.

アイフォンは、スマートフォンメーカーの水準を引き上げた。
「bar」はもともとは「棒」の意味ですが、ここでは、「基準」を意味し、「水準、基準を上げる」の意味になります。Raiseは他にも「育てる」、「（お金などを）集める」の意味があり、他の単語と組み合わせて「raise the voice：声を上げえる（怒鳴る）」、「raise a questions：質問を上げかける」と様々な表現があります。

「box」は「箱」の意味ですが、「型」と考えると分かりやすいです。自分自身の想像力や発想を生かして新しい考えを生み出そうとする、西洋ならではの表現です。英語話者にはとても馴染みのある表現で、あるファーストフードチェーンでは、これをモジって「think outside the bun」というスローガンを打ち出しています。「bun」はハンバーガーのパンの部分ですが、「バーガーではなくて、他の物を食べてね」と、バーガーが大好きなアメリカ人に向けた、とても独特なメッセージ性を醸し出しています。

One Sunday morning George burst into the living room and said,
“Dad! Mom! I have some great news for you! I am getting married to the most beautiful girl in town. She lives a block away and her name is Susan.”

After dinner, George’s dad took him aside,
“Son, I have to talk with you.”

“Look at your mother, George. She and I have been married 30 years, she’s a wonderful wife and mother, but, she has never offered much excitement in the bedroom, so I used to fool around with woman a lot. Susan is actually your half sister, and I’m afraid you cannot marry her.”

George was broken-hearted. After eight months he eventually started dating girls again. A year later he came home and very proudly announced,
“Dianne said Yes! We’re getting married in June.”

Again his father insisted on another private conversation and broke the sad news.
“Dianne is your half sister too, George. I’m awfully sorry about this.”

George was livid! He finally decided to go to his mother with the news his father had shared.
“Dad has done so much harm. I guess I’m never going to get married,” he complained. “every time I fall in love, dad tells me the girl is my half sister.”

“Hehe,” his mother chuckled, shaking her head,
“don’t pay attention to what he says. He’s not really your father.”

ある日曜日の朝、ジョージはリビングに駆け入り言いました。
「父さん、母さん、嬉しい知らせがあるよ。この町で一番美しい娘と結婚するんだ。1ブロック向こうに住んでいるスーザンだよ。」

ジョージの心は折れてしまいました。8ヶ月後、ジョージはデートし始めました。そして1年後誇らしげに言いました。
「ダイアンがYESって言った！6月に結婚するんだ」

ジョージのお父さんはまたしてもプライベートの会話を求め、悲しい知らせを伝えました。
「ダイアンも腹違いの妹なんだ、ジョージ。本当にすまない。」

ジョージは憤怒して、父からの知らせを母に伝えることを決意しました。

「父さんはなにもかもダメにする。たぶん俺は一生結婚しないんだ。」ジョージは文句を言いました。

「誰かを好きになると、父さんが腹違いの妹だというんだ。」

ジョーイの母は、首を横に振ってくすくすと笑いました。
「父さんの言うことを聞くことないわ。父さんはお前の本当の父親ではないのよ。」
