TOKYO —

Fast Retailing Co. opened its largest Uniqlo store in Tokyo’s posh Ginza district on Friday, as some 1,000 people lined up before the opening to pick up the latest fashions at the major casual clothing store. Boasting 12 floors and a total retail space of about 5,000 square meters, the Uniqlo Ginza Store is the brand’s ninth global flagship store after those in New York, London, Paris, Shanghai, Osaka, Seoul and Taipei.

Two flagship stores are in New York.”We are grateful for the great stage we have been provided,” said Tadashi Yanai, the company’s chairman and president, shortly before the 10 a.m. opening. ”I am very excited thinking about the globalization starting from Ginza.’

Bank robber returns to the bank he robbed for cab fare

A would-be bank robber was arrested in the US – after returning to the scene of his crime to withdraw cash for taxi fare. The 39-year-old man had tried to rob a Wells Fargo bank at gunpoint by handing the cashier a note saying: "Give me the money or we start shooting"."Obviously, feeling safe behind the bulletproof glass, the teller just stepped back and the individual fled without any money."The man jumped into a taxi to make his getaway back to his car parked nearby where he realised he didn’t have any money for the fare.

Fearing he intended driving off without paying, the female taxi driver blocked in his car and got the attention of a police officer."The officer just convinced the guy that you need to get some money and pay the fare or else he would end up in trouble," Police Chief Johnson added. The policeman escorted him back to the same bank to withdraw cash legally where bank employees recognised him. The man was arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery.

GPS Tracking Disaster: Japanese Tourists Drive Straight into the Pacific

Three Japanese tourists in Australia found themselves in an embarrasing situation after their GPS navigation system led them into the Pacific Ocean. The road looked clear, at low tide – but the GPS device guided them from a gravel road into thick mud. They tried to get back to solid ground, but as the tide rose, they were forced to abandon their car.

The three, who are students from Tokyo, intended to drive to a neighboring island and made it about 50 yards offshore before they realized they were stranded. A passerby eventually gave them a lift back to the mainland. Though the car was insured, they will still have to pay about $1,500 in damages. The students stated that they plan to try a trip to the island again some time in the future.

Hiroko drops by Sam’s cubicle to talk with him. She needs to prepare for her first customer presentation.

Hiroko: Hi, is this a good time for you to talk?

Sam: Sure, please have a seat. Jimmy wants our team to only speak English in all our meetings. I hope you don’t mind.

Hiroko: Sure, no problem. I heard you just joined Menttal this year. I joined about a year ago, but the learning curve is pretty steep.

Sam: Yes, the biggest challenge is getting oriented. It’s not at all like my previous company. What’s on your mind?

Hiroko: Well, as you know, I have my first customer meeting as a Technical Sales Engineer this week, and I’m scared to death.

Sam: Scared to death — you mean very nervous?

Hiroko: Right.

Sam: Well, that’s normal, but customer meetings are not so intimidating if you’re prepared. You want to talk about it?

Hiroko: Sure, if you’ve got time.

Sam

I’m not sure I understand the problem. Could you explain in more detail?

Hiroko: Well, I was just beginning to get the hang of it around here when my job was changed.

Sam:

I thought you asked for the change. It is a promotion.

Hiroko: I did. Don’t get me wrong. I was dying for this promotion, but when I was a customer support rep, I had some issues.

Sam: What kind of issues?

Hiroko: You see, I spent high school and college in the US and learned presentation skills there. Maybe my tone with customers will be too direct and casual.

Sam: So, you feel you might not be polite enough in Japanese for the customer meeting?

Hiroko: Well, I completed training in business Japanese, but I’ve only talked with customers on the phone before, meeting them face-to-face is different!

Sam: Well, remember, prepare your presentation thoroughly and review it with me before the meeting.

NEW! – Q&A with Japanese women on their experiences being married to a foreigner.

(Tomoko : mid 30s married 6 years to Australian man):

Q: Who controls the budget in your relationship?
A: We are generally independent in terms of budget. We both pay for what we use. At the moment, I am in charge of all the paperwork and paying the rent. I am on maternity leave now but when our child goes to kindergarten, I will go back to work. Usually in a relationship with a Japanese man, the husband brings in the salary, but I don’t have that situation! I am the bread-winner of the family!

Q: What was it like introducing your husband-to-be to your family?
A: The Japanese are known for being polite. So when I introduced him to my family they were very polite and welcoming; we didn’t meet any strong resistance. But we could both tell that my parents were acting polite rather than being natural and relaxed. This made my husband feel confused as he could sense the disparity between hidden and expressed emotions. My advice is to get your husband speaking Japanese as soon as possible and keep trying to make him a part of the family.

Q: What is your advice to a Japanese woman considering marrying a foreign man?
A: One thing I had to accept, in the early years of our relationship while we were dating and up to this very day, was that he liked to invite his friends to our home. Whether it was a visiting friend from his hometown or a drunk friend who missed the train, he would invite them to stay in our home. I really did not like this but I guess this was normal for him to invite people over all the time.

(Kaori late 20s female married to Swedish man):

Q: What language do you speak when arguing?
A: We start in English, our common language. But on occasion the fight gets really heated and we usually switch to our native languages, with me shouting and swearing in Japanese and him doing the same in Swedish! We always kiss and make up though…

Q: What kind of role did your husband play when your child was first born?
A: We were in Sweden when the child was born. In Sweden, there is more equality between the sexes. For example, he was able to take ‘paternity leave’ and stay at home to help me with the baby. He had no problem changing diapers and bathing our child… He was very helpful!

Q: What is your advice to a Japanese woman considering marrying a foreign man?
A: One thing you have to remember is that when people get old, they often long for their home. If you are married to a foreign guy you must realise that one of you will end your life in a different country. This is not an issue if you are marrying a Japanese. As for the relationship, I really think the key is to respect your partner’s culture and language, and give him respect. And expect the same!
