Casino to close in latest blow to Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY – Atlantic City’s crumbling casino market disintegrated even further July 12 as owners of the Trump Plaza casino said they plan to shut it down in mid-September.

The news is the latest in a series of setbacks for New

Jersey’s gambling market, which until just a few years ago was the second largest in the United States after Nevada; Pennsylvania, which legalized gambling in 2004, has now taken over that spot.

On Jan. 1, Atlantic City had 12 casinos. By the end of September, that number could be down to eight, translating into thousands of jobs lost.

Analysts have noted that the casino market in the northeastern United States has been oversaturated, and that some closures would be necessary for the survival of others.

北米東部のカジノ、飽和状態で一部閉鎖へ
崩壊が進む（米ニュージャージー州）アトランティックシティーのカジノ業界を7月12日、さらなる衝撃が襲った。カジノ「トランプ•プラザ」のオーナーが、9月中旬に施設を閉鎖予定であると発表したためだ。
このニュースはニュージャージーのギャンブル業界の後退を示す最新のものだ。ニュージャージー州のギャンブル業界はほんの数年前まで、米国で（ラスベガスのある）ネバダ州に次ぐ2番目の規模を誇っていたが、2004年にギャンブルを合法化したペンシルベニア州が現在その地位を占めている。
1月1日の時点で、アトランティックシティーには12のカジノがあったが、9月末にはその数は8にまで減少し、数千人が職を失うとみられる。
専門家は、米国北東部のカジノ業界は飽和状態にあり、生き残るカジノがあれば閉鎖するカジノがあるのもやむを得ないとの見方を示している。

Last surviving crew member of Enola Gay dies

ATLANTA – Theodore VanKirk, the last surviving member of the crew that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, died July 28 of natural causes at a retirement home in Stone Mountain, Georgia, his son Tom VanKirk said. He was 93.

VanKirk served as navigator on the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the first atomic bomb on Aug. 6, 1945.

VanKirk said he thought the A-bomb was necessary because it shortened the war and eliminated the need for an Allied land invasion. But it also made him wary of war.

“The whole World War II experience shows that wars don’t settle anything. And atomic weapons don’t settle anything,” he said. “I’d like to see them all abolished.”

エノラ•ゲイに乗務した最後の生存者、93歳で死去
広島に原爆を投下した（暴撃機の）乗務員のうち、最後の生存者だったセオドア•バンカークさんが7月28日、米ジョージア州ストーンマウンテンの老人ホームで老衰のため死去したと、息子のトム•バンカークさんが語った。93歳だった。
バンカークさんは、1945年8月6日に最初の原爆を投下した、「超空の要塞（ようさい）」と呼ばれたB29暴撃機「エノラ•ゲイ」に、航空士として搭乗した。
バンカークさんは、原爆によって戦争終結が早まり、連合国による日本本土への上陸侵攻の必要がなくなったため、原爆は必要だったという考えを語っていた。一方、原爆は彼に、戦争に対する警戒心も植え付けた。

What is your opinion? – Do you think Japan should enforce a travel ban or other restrictions on visitors from countries where Ebola is spreading?

(Paul : mid 40’s British): Though I personally do not like governments enforcing travel bans on citizens, I am leaning towards implementing restrictions on people flying into Japan from West African countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, etc…

I feel there is a difference between limiting a person’s rights to travel to a certain country versus not allowing visitors from certain countries from travelling. In this instance, it would be to protect and ensure the Ebola outbreak does not come into Japan.

(Janice : early 20’s American): I feel imposing any travel to and from these areas suffering from the Ebola virus epidemic will actually hurt and not help the efforts of containing or preventing a more serious outbreak in other parts of the world. I understand that people are in fear of having similar outbreaks in their back yard, but we can not give in to the fear.

Rather, to combat an epidemic, we need to ensure the needed resources can reach these hard hit areas and tackle the problem where it starts. If we can contain or diminish the numbers of people contracting the virus, we can better understand methods and techniques to manage it.

There are many professionals in the medical field as well as volunteers that risk their safety and lives by travelling to these areas to help people. If we make it harder for them to return to their countries, it may discourage them from assisting in this potential global problem.
