Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg starts online book club

Mark Zuckerberg wants to add a little more “book” to Facebook.The Facebook founder and CEO recently vowed to read a book every other week in 2015,　in order to learn about different beliefs, cultures and technologies.

Zuckerberg created a page called “A Year of Books” and urged his friends to join him in the project. As of Jan. 4, it had over 100,000 likes.

“I’m looking forward to shifting more of my media diet towards reading books,” he said.　The first book he introduced, Moises Naim’s “The End of Power,” was out of stock Jan. 4 on Amazon.com.

マーク・ザッカーバーグ氏は、フェイスブックに新しい「ブック」を加えることを望んでいる。フェイスブックの創業者で最高経営責任者(CEO)の同氏は先ごろ、2015年は2週間ごとに1冊の本を読むと断言した。多様な考え方や文化、テクノロジーについて学ぶためだという。
ザッカーバーグ氏は「A Year of Books」というページを作り、友人たちにもこのプロジェクトに参加するよう呼びかけた。1月4日の時点で、（見た人が賛意を示す）「いいね！」の数は10万件を超えた。
「自分のメディア習慣を、より読書の方にシフトさせていくのを楽しみにしている」と、ザッカーバーグ氏は語った。
同氏が最初に紹介した本、モイセス・ナイーム氏の「The End of Power（権力の終わり）」は1月4日の時点で、（ネット通販大手）Amazon.comで品切れの状態だ。

Number of foreign visitors hits record high in 2014

A record number of foreign tourists visited Japan in 2014 due to the weaker yen, eased visa restrictions, expanded tax exemption and aggressive promotional efforts, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.

A total of 13.414 million people visited the nation in 2014, according to estimates released by the organization Jan. 20.

JNTO said the 2014 figure represents a 29.4 percent increase from the previous year, when the number topped 10 million for the first time.

By country and region, most of the visitors-2.829 million – came from Taiwan, up 28 percent from 2013, followed by South Korea with 2.755 million, 12.2 percent higher than the previous year.

The third largest total, 2.409 million, came from China.

訪日客　過去最多の1341万人を記録

2014年に日本を訪れた外国人観光客の数が、過去最多を記録した。日本政府観光局はこの要因を、円安、ビザの規制緩和、免税品目の拡大、そして積極的な宣伝活動によるものとしている。
この組織（日本政府観光局）が1月20日に発表した推計によると、2014年には計1341万4千人が日本を訪れた。
また、2014年の訪日客数は、初めて1千万人を超えた前年より29.4パーセント増えたという。
国・地域別では、最も割合が大きい台湾が2013年から28パーセント増の282万9千人、次いで韓国が前年比12.2パーセント増の275万5千人だった。
合計の訪日客数が3番目に多い中国からは、240万9千人が訪れた。

"Hi, I am currently a mother of a 2 year old daughter and I have some concerns on whether or not I am doing the right thing for my daughter. Let me explain if I can briefly. My child has been going to a "hokuen" for almost 8 months now and I have been worried because I have not made any new "momma tomos" or as you can say in English "Mamma friends".

I want my daughter to have friends whom she can play on weekends and after school with but I find it hard to socialize with other mothers. Of course, we have the general greetings in the morning and when we pick up the kids but there really is no "real" friendship developing. Honestly speaking, I sort of do not want new friends since I already have friends and I feel new friends are troublesome. On the other hand, I feel selfish in the way I do not make an effort to make friends so my daughter can have opportunities to interact with other children her age.

I consider myself an open and socialable person but after becoming a mother, I feel as though I have become more closed to the outside world outside of my family. Is it normal to be this way? Am I being selfish for not putting an effort to find friends for my daughter? "

"Hi Tomoko, I do not know how "momma tomos" work in Japan but I feel as though I am in the same boat as you as I myself am a mother of a boy attending a nursery here in Japan. Actually, you are in a better position than myself in that you have some friends in Japan.

I know what you are going through as I feel I seem to have become less socialable when I started living in Japan. I am not sure if the suburbs are different than Tokyo where I am living but I do sense that I am becoming more of a loner. Though I share your sense of duty to make new friends with other mothers whom have children for the benefit of our children, I prefer not to force it. Meaning I am not going to make new "friends" just for the sake of finding playmates for my child.

Personally, I prefer to make friends naturally at the supermarket, park, coffeeshops, yoga classes, or etc… where I frequently visit than change who I am and be dare I say "fake" in developing friendship?

I neither think you are selfish nor feel you are strange since I know of many people who are going through the same thing. If friendships develop naturally, great. On the other hand, don’t beat yourself for lack of effort. "
