KDDI offers world’s 1st washable smartphone

For those who can’t put their smartphones down even in the bathroom or at the dinner table, a new model that can be cleaned with soap and water is now available.

KDDI Corp.’s DIGNO rafre, the "world’s first entirely

washable" smartphone, hit the market on Dec. 11. Capable of withstanding soapsuds and water as hot as 43 degrees, the DIGNO rafre was suggested by a KDDI employee who was concerned about her children’s hygiene, as they often fiddled with their smartphones with dirty hands or put them in their mouths.

The phone created by Kyocera Corp. costs 21,600 yen.

NEW! – Advice Column from a Foreigner’s Point of View (Relationship, Life, Work, and Everything Under the Sun)

(Tamiko : early 30’s Japanese): English Version translated from Japanese

As a divorced mother of two who had to initially give up her maiden name and get it back, I think the law that requires husbands and wives to share the same last name is a form of gender discrimination and outdated in this society. Although I’m skeptical of what the verdict will be, it’s finally being challenged in Japan’s highest court. For me, not only was changing my last name to my husband’s last name on all legal papers including my accounting license a hassle, but it was twice as bad when I had to change them all back after the divorce. In the U.S., is it required for husbands and wives to share the same last name?
