Amazon developing longer-range wireless network

Amazon.com Inc. said it is developing a longer-range equivalent to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless protocols that the largest U.S. online retailer hopes third parties will eventually use in smart devices.
The Amazon Sidewalk, announced alongside a new range of Echo speakers and a multilingual mode for its Alexa virtual assistant, underscores the firm’s growth expectations for the internet of things — where a wider variety of devices and appliances are controlled over computer networks.

The company anticipates Sidewalk’s use in devices as varied as garden water sensors, or mailboxes that would alert the owner to new mail.

Is that Kobe beef real or fake? Now you can tell by comparing DNA tests

Kobe beef has become popular overseas, but how do people know they are eating real Kobe beef or fake Kobe beef? An industry body has the answer: with DNA tests.

If someone thinks that a butcher’s shop or restaurant is selling fake Kobe beef, they can contact the marketing association. The association can then test the DNA of the suspicious meat and compare it to the DNA of the stored meat.

The system will help protect the reputation of Kobe beef, the association said. The DNA testing system starts this month.

“We want to create a system to reassure consumers as they enjoy Kobe beef,” said an official of the association.

偽装「神戸牛」、DNA 鑑定で看破 業界初の試みを10月より開始

神戸牛は海外で人気になってきているが、人々は自分が食べているのが本物の神戸牛か偽物の神戸牛かをどのようにして知るのだろうか？ある関係団体にはその答えがある：DNA鑑定だ。

神戸肉流通推進協議会は9月25日、生産者は神戸にある食肉センターへ生きた牛を持ち込むことができるようになると発表した。その牛から取られた牛肉はそれぞれ別の認証番号がつけられ、5年間保管される。

精肉店やレストランが偽物の神戸牛を販売していると思ったら、同団体に連絡をすることができる。同団体は疑惑がある肉のDNAを検査し、保管されている食肉のDNAと比較する。

このシステムは神戸牛の評判を保護するのに役立つだろうと、同団体は述べている。DNA鑑定システムは今月から開始される。

「我々は、消費者が神戸牛を楽しむときに安心できるシステムを作りたい」と同団体の職員は話した。

投資の話をする際、Angel investorとVenture capitalistという言葉を耳にすると思います。両方とも投資家を指しますが、少し違いがあります。

Angel investor：裕福な個人が独自または、個人がグループを作って自分たちのお金を投資をする。（自分たちのお金）
venture capitalist ：他の人が投資してできたファンドを資金源に投資をする。（自分のお金ではない）

また、Angel investorはスタートアップなどリスクの高い案件に投資する傾向がある一方、Venture Capitalistは、既に事業が立ち上がっている案件に投資する傾向があります。
Bad egg　「悪い人、当てにならない人」
The new sales agent was a bad egg and deliberately lied to the customer.

新しい営業マンは悪い奴だ。故意に顧客にウソをついている。
Bad eggは,「悪い人、当てにならない人」の意味で、もともと卵を割った時に中身が悪くなっていた時の「がっかり感」や「苛立ち」をと例えた表現です。また、似たような表現にbad appleがあります。Bad appleは「周りに悪影響を与える人・物」のことで、いくつかのリンゴの中に腐ったリンゴがあると、周りのリンゴも腐らせてしまうことが語源です。
ビシネス英会話 Out of line with 「～と一致（合致）しない」
If your pay is out of line with your peers’ pay, it’s time to make an appointment with the boss.

もしあなたの給料が同僚と同じ程度でないなら、ボスと面談するべき時期かもしれない。
Out of line with…は「…が一致しない」の意味で「…」が一定の線（基準から）逸してしまっていることを表します。反対表現に「in line with …」があり、こちらは「…」が一定の線（基準）に収まっている、当てはまっていることを表します。似たような表現に、「out of one’s league（ずば抜けて格が違う）」があります。ここでの「league」はサッカーのリーグのような「クラス」や「ランク」を意味し、比べている対象の「誰か（one’s）」とは格が違うことを表します。

The clever old man

One evening an old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn’t been there for a while, and look it over.

He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.

As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.

One of the women shouted to him,
“We’re not coming out until you leave!”

The old man frowned,
“I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.” Holding the bucket up he said, “I’m here to feed alligator.”

ある夕方、農家のおじいさんが池に行こうと思いつきました。しばらく行っていなかったので様子を見るためです。

おじいさんは、フルーツを持ち帰るため5ガロン（約20リットル）のバケツを持っていきました。

池に近づくにつれて、おじいさんは喜び溢れる話し声や叫び声を聞きました。

さらに近づくにつれて、おじいさんはそれが服を身に付けないで池で泳いでいる若い女性たちだと分かりました。

おじいさんが女性達に自分の存在を知らせると、女性たちは深みのある方へ移動しました。

「あなたがどっかに行くまで、出ないから」と叫びました。

おじいさんは顔をしかめて言いました。
「わたしは、裸で泳いでいるあなたたちを見に来たわけでも、池から出させようとしているわけでもないよ。（バケツを高くあげて）ワニに餌を上げに来たんだよ。」
