Mines in South Africa to shine due to covid-19 ignited Gold Rush

The glory days of South Africa’s gold industry are long gone, but record prices on the international market for the metal combined with a weak local currency have thrown a lifeline to the country’s remaining producers.

Gold has gained a quarter in value this year, hitting record highs of more than $2,000 an ounce as investors buy it as a haven asset amid the global economic turmoil of Covid-19.

For South African producers, the rise has been leavened by a weaker currency, with the rand tumbling 16% against the U.S. dollar this year as the country’s struggling economy buckles further under the weight of the coronavirus pandemic.

Surging profits for gold sold abroad in U.S. dollars have helped the country’s producers defy the gravity of South Africa’s worst economic contraction in at least a century, including a five-week mining shutdown from late March to May.

Japan News:

Japanese companies turn wasted beer into “Revive” Gin

ABInBev Japan, The Ethical Spirits & Co, and Gekkeikan Sake Company have come together to turn undrunk beer into a new spirit, Revive Gin. Making things even better, part of the sales from the new product will go to support the local cultural and entertainment industries that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sales of beer in Japan are currently down 52.1% compared to the same month last year. With that in mind, the three Japanese companies began working together to turn the wasted beer into Gin.

ABInBev Japan supplied 20,000 liters of excess beer as a base ingredient, Gekkeikan Sake Company supervised the distillation process, and The Ethical Spirits & Co was responsible for the distribution.

In order to make the Gin, the beer is soaked with Japanese beech wood and then it is flavored with juniper berries, hops, and lemon peel. According to the brand, Revive Gin possesses a “light, elegant flavor with savory and spicy notes.”

Part of the sales made from the Gin will be donated to artists and business operators in the local cultural and entertainment industry, which faced an “unprecedented crisis and the loss of 175 billion JPY” because of the coronavirus crisis, according to the Drinks Business.

You can pre-order Revive Gin via The Ethical Spirits official web shop. The spirit is sold at JPY 5500 ($52 USD).

NEW! – Learning Western Cultures and Humors through Jokes!!

After a tiring day at work, I got on the train – my usual commute – and sat down and closed my eyes.

As the train rolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to me pulled out his cellphone and started speaking in a really loud voice: “Hi sweetheart. It’s Eric. I’m on the train,” I could hear him bellow.

“Yes, I know it’s the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting”.

“No, honey, not with that blonde from the accounting office. It was with my boss”.

“No sweetheart, you’re the only on in my life”.

‘’Yes, I’m sure, cross my heart”.

At first, I tried asking him politely to lower his voice, but he got really cross with me and said – rather rudely, I might add- “You are free to find another seat.”

Fifteen minutes pass and they guy is still talking loudly. It’s at this point that I got fed up with his antics and leaned into the phone to say,

“Eric, hang up the phone and come back to bed.”

Redfaced and absolutely shocked, he shut off the phone and didn’t say a single word after I did that. I doubt he uses his phone in public any longer.
