What is “B.Y.O.B.”?

University students and other young people like to have parties without spending a lot of money. One way to do this is to provide some snacks, cheese, crackers, popcorn, patato chips, dips, and mixers such as tonic water, soda water, and soft drinks, then ask everyone else to “bring your own bottle,” B.Y.O.B. Each guest brings his or her own drinks (beer, whiskey, gin, etc.) and takes home whatever is left in the bottle at the end of the party. It usually happens that people share what they have brought, and many guests will leave behind the remainders. A similar type of party with food is called a “pot–luck supper.” The host provides the main dish and asks each friend to bring either a salad, vegetable, or dessert. To prevent having three salads and no desserts, the host usually asks guests to bring specific types of dishes and tells them what he is planning for a main entree. Since the guests are all contributing to the party, it is un–necessary to take an additional gift.
