To come about: to happen.
〔事が〕起こる、生じる、発生する Ex: How did that come about? (どうしてそうなったのですか。／どうしてそんなことになったの？)
   
To bring about: to cause to happen. This idiom is used to indicate ‘who’ or ‘what’ caused something to come about.
〔徐々に〕～をもたらす、～を引き起こす Ex: What brought about this sudden change of heart? (どうして急に気持ちが変わったのですか。)
   
To build up: to increase slowly, to make stronger gradually.
〔～の程度が〕高まる、増大する Ex: At least, we have to try not to build up any more wrinkles. (少なくとも、これ以上しわが増えないようにしないと。)
   
To die down: to decrease, to lessen strength or intensity.
〔風・音・騒ぎなどが〕徐々にやむ［弱まる・静まる・おさまる］,小さくなる、少なくなる Ex: It was several days before the protests died down. (抗議行動がやんだのはそれから数日後だった。)
   
To fade away: to diminish gradually in time or distance.
徐々に［少しずつ・だんだん・次第に］なくなる［衰えていく］ Ex: After the accident, Sharon seemed to just fade away. (事故の後、シャロンは次第に弱っていくように見えた。)
   
To die out: not to exist anymore; to be in the process of disappearing.
〔種族などが〕絶滅する,〔風習などが〕廃れる Ex: Punk music is only a fad and will probably die out within the year. (パンク音楽は一時的な流行だから、もう年内には廃れるだろうよ。)
   
To make out: to read or see clearly; to prepare a legal document, such as a will, a check, etc.
理解する、分かる,〈表・書類などを〉作成する Ex: I can’t make out what the words on that sign say. (その看板に何と書いてあるか判読できない。)
   
To live up to: to fulfill (a standard or promise).
〔期待など〕に沿う［かなう・応える・応えて生活する］ Ex: If newlyweds have unrealistic expectations, they will probably end up divorced because neither could live up to them. (もし新婚夫婦が新婚生活に過大な期待をかけると、どちらもその期待に応えることが出来ないために、離婚に終わってしまうだろう。)
   
To stick to: to adhere to (a promise), to follow or obey (a set of rules, procedures, etc.).
[条例や約束]を守る Ex: You should stick to something once you have started it. (何かを一度始めたら、それに専念すべきだ。)
   
To rip off: to cheat , to take unfair advantage of. The noun form ‘ripoff’ derives from this idiom.
だます、だまし取る Ex: He ripped you off. (あなたは彼に金をだまし取られたのですよ。)
   
To stand up for: to insist on, to demand; to defend, to support.
～のために立ち向かう,〔権利などを〕要求する, 〔人・意見・権利などを〕守る Ex: She will no doubt stand up for him if there is a problem. (何か問題があれば、間違いなく彼女は彼に味方するだろう。)
   
To cut corners: to economize, to save money.
〔経費・時間などを〕節約する Ex: In an effort to cut corners, all of our family pack our own lunch and take it to work. (節約のために、わが家では全員が昼食を弁当にして職場に持参している。)
