Phrasal Expressions : Lesson 5
  -Read the following and test your understanding by taking the quiz below
 
To look out: to be careful pr cautious (also: to watch out). Both of these idioms can occur with the preposition ‘for’.
気を付ける、用心する Ex: Look out for the bus. (バスに注意しなさい。)
   
To shake hands: to exchange greetings by clasping hands.
握手する、手を握る、合意に達する Ex: The tall man stooped slightly to shake hands with her. (その背の高い男性は少し腰を落として彼女と握手しました。)
   
To get back: to return.
戻る、帰る、返ってくる Ex: It’s time for us to leave that tangent aside and get back on the track. (脇道にそれるのはこれくらいにして話を元に戻しましょう。)
   
To catch a cold: to become sick with a cold of the nose or throat.
風邪をひく Ex: Don’t sleep there. You’ll catch a cold.  (そんな所で寝ると風邪ひくよ。)
   
To get over: to recover from an illness, to accept a loss or sorrow.
治る、立ち直る Ex: You need to get over your sorrows and get on with your life. (あなたは、悲しみから立ち直って、自分の人生を生きていかなければいけません。)
   
To make up one’s mind: to reach a decision, to decide finally.
決心する Ex: Please make up your mind if you want to go to the U.S. (アメリカに行きたいのかどうか、はっきりしてください。)
   
To change one’s mind: to alter one’s decision or opinion.
気[考え]が変わる Ex: I said I wouldn’t be going to the concert, but I’ve changed my mind. ( 私は「そのコンサートには行かない」と言っていたのですが気が変わりました。)
   
For the time being: temporarily (also: for now).
差し当たり(は)、当分(の間) Ex: For the time being you will have to come to hospital every other day. (当分の間、1日おきに通院してください。◆医者⇒患者)
   
For good: permanently, forever.
永遠に、永久に Ex: His parents were worried that he would stay overseas for good. (彼は死ぬまで外国から帰って来ないのではないかと両親は心配しました。)
   
To call off: to cancel.
〔計画・予定など〕中止する[させる] Ex: They resolved to call off the strike. (ストライキ中止を決定しました。)
   
To put off: to postpone.
予定日を後ろにずらす、延期する Ex: We decided to put off the meeting because only two people could come. (二人しか会議に出られなかったので、会議を延期することにした。)
   
In a hurry: hurried, rushed (also: in a rush)
急いで、慌てて Ex: Please be brief because I’m in a hurry.  (急いでるので手短にお願いします。)
