Vatican restorers set to work on 400-year-old centerpiece inside St Peter’s Basilica

The bronze-and-wood canopy in the middle of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City is getting its first major restoration since the mid-1700s. The canopy is almost 30 meters high and covers the high altar of the church. Designed by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, it was completed in 1634. It stands over the spot where St. Peter, the first pope, is said to be buried.

Peter died as a Christian martyr during the reign of Roman Emperor Nero in the first century.

The restoration project will cost around €700,000 (¥114 million). It started on Feb. 14 and is set to be completed by late November, Vatican officials said.

That will be in time for the start of the 2025 holy year. The holy year, also known as a jubilee, is held at least every 25 years. The 2025 holy year starts on Christmas Eve when the pope opens the Holy Door of the basilica.

Japan to revise official romanization rules

Japan is planning to revise its romanization rules for the first time in about 70 years to bring the official language transliteration system in line with everyday usage, according to government officials.

The country will switch to the Hepburn rules from the current Kunrei-shiki rules, meaning, for example, the official spelling of “Aiti” will be “Aichi.”

Similarly, the official spelling of “Sibuya” will be “Shibuya”.

The Hepburn system has long been predominantly used in society as well as in officialdom.

on the fly
The potential for email misfires between bosses and subordinates is mounting, as the volume of email grows and more people read it on the fly on mobile devices.

on the runやin a hurryに置き換えることができる。例えば、react on the fly/run、react in a hurry「急いで対応する」、decide on the fly/run、decide in a hurry「急いで決定する」などと使う。

silent treatment
Nearly one-third of 700 employees surveyed by researchers at Florida State University said their bosses had given them "the silent treatment" in the preceding year, according to the 2006 study.

Reading an email aloud before sending it is a good way to ensure the tone is neither wishy-washy nor too harsh.

他にも、He is so wishy-washy.「彼はとにかく優柔不断だ」、Don't be wishy-washy!「なよなよしないで!」

Wedding vow

During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approaches the pastor with an unusual offer.

“Look, I’ll give you $100 if you’ll change the wedding vows.”

“When you get to the part where I’m supposed to promise to ‘love, honor, and obey’ and ‘be faithful to her forever,’ I’d appreciate it if you’d just leave that out.”

He passes the minister a $100 bill and walks away satisfied.

On the day of the wedding, when it comes time for the groom’s vows, the pastor looks the young man in the eye and says,..

“Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?”

The groom swallows hard, looks around, and says in a tiny voice, “Yes.” He then leans toward the pastor and hisses, “I thought we had a deal?”

The pastor puts a $100 bill into the groom’s hand and whispers, “She made me a better offer.”
