ヒロコはサムと話をするため、彼の席に立ち寄りました。ヒロコは初めての顧客向けプレゼンの準備をする必要があります。

Hiroko:

Hi, is this a good time for you to talk?

こんにちは。今、お時間よろしいでしょうか。

Sam:

Sure, please have a seat. Jimmy wants our team to only speak English in all our meetings. I hope you don’t mind.

いいですよ。かけてください。ジミーは我々チームに全ミーティングで英語を話すことを希望しています。かまいませんか。

Hiroko:

Sure, no problem. I heard you just joined Menttal this year. I joined about a year ago, but the learning curve is pretty steep.

ええ、もちろんです。サムさんは今年メンタールに入社したと聞きました。私は１年ほど前なんですが、まだ学ぶことがたくさんあって。

Sam:

Yes, the biggest challenge is getting oriented. It’s not at all like my previous company. What’s on your mind?

新しい環境に慣れることがいちばん難しいことですよ。私が以前勤めていた企業とはまったく違います。何か気がかりなことてもあるんですか。

Hiroko:

Well, as you know, I have my first customer meeting as a Technical Sales Engineer this week, and I’m scared to death.

ご存知だと思いますが、今週テクニカル・セールス・エンジニアとして始めての顧客との会議があるのですが、scared to death なのです。

Sam:

Scared to death — you mean very nervous?

scared to death とは、とても不安だということですか。

Hiroko:

Right.

そうです。

Sam:

Well, that’s normal, but customer meetings are not so intimidating if you’re prepared. You want to talk about it?

それは普通のことです。しかし顧客との会議は、準備さえしておけば怖いものではありません。相談に乗りましょうか。

Hiroko:

Sure, if you’ve got time.

お時間があれば、ぜひ。

Sam

I’m not sure I understand the problem. Could you explain in more detail?

どういうことでしょうか。もう少し詳しく話してくれますか。

Hiroko:

Well, I was just beginning to get the hang of it around here when my job was changed.

それが、ようやく仕事の要領をつかみかけていたところで、部署を異動したのです。

Sam:

I thought you asked for the change. It is a promotion.

異動はあなた自身の希望だったんですよね。昇格ですし。

Hiroko:

I did. Don’t get me wrong. I was dying for this promotion, but when I was a customer support rep, I had some issues.

そうです。誤解しないで下さい。これは待ち望んでいた昇格でしたが、顧客サポート担当者としては、少なからず問題があったんです。

Sam:

What kind of issues?

どういった問題ですか。

Hiroko:

You see, I spent high school and college in the US and learned presentation skills there. Maybe my tone with customers will be too direct and casual.

実は、私は、高校と大学時代をアメリカで過ごし、そこでプレゼンのやり方を学びました。顧客に対する私の口調は、率直でカジュアルすぎるかもしれません。

Sam:

So, you feel you might not be polite enough in Japanese for the customer meeting?

すると、顧客との会議では、あなたの日本語は丁寧さに欠けるかもしれないと思うのですね。

Hiroko:

Well, I completed training in business Japanese, but I’ve only talked with customers on the phone before, meeting them face-to-face is different!

そうですね、ビジネス日本語の研修は受けたのですが、お客様とは今まで電話でしか話をしたことがないのです。直接会って話すのは違いますよね。

Sam:

Well, remember, prepare your presentation thoroughly and review it with me before the meeting.

それでしたら、プレゼンの準備を徹底的にして、会議の前に私と一緒に見直しをしましょう。
