Experimental drugs for treating Ebola in the works

WASHINGTON – The largest-ever Ebola outbreak in West Africa has interest surging in the creation of the first drugs and vaccines for the hemorrhagic fever.

An experimental drug saved monkeys from a virus closely

related to Ebola even after symptoms began, and a drug that targets Ebola in the same way is under development, researchers in Texas said Aug. 20.

The monkey study involves a strain of the Marburg virus that is an even more lethal cousin of Ebola. The drug uses bits of genetic material called small interfering RNA to block the virus’ ability to reproduce.

The World Health Organization said it was ethical to try unapproved drugs and vaccines during the current Ebola outbreak which has affected 2,000 people.

NEW! – Advice Column from a Foreigner’s Point of View (Relationship, Life, Work, and Everything Under the Sun)

(Tomoko : late 20’s Japanese): English Version translated from Japanese

"I have been dating a guy(Japanese) I met at work for almost 3 years now and immediately from the get go, we have kept our relationship a secret from our boss and coworkers. I understand the need to keep everything under wraps at the office but my boyfriend also does not even introduce me to his friends or family. Even when I ask him to hang out with my friends or meet members of my family, he brushes it off and says it is not time yet.

I am starting to think about what I mean to him. Is he even thinking about how his unwillingness to show our relationship makes me feel? It seems as though he is content with just keeping our relationship as it is without moving forward. Is this normal?"

(Jenny: early 30’s Japanese-American):

"Hey Tomoko, thanks for your email and trust me when I say that I feel you girl… I really do. I have dated both Japanese as well as Americans and I do understand the differences (and there is a lot! But I don’t want to go into detail as it would take up hundreds of pages 🙂 )among the opposite sex in their approach to relationships.

I understand how you both are keeping your relationship on the "hush hush" in the workplace but I personally feel that his unwillingness to be more involved in your life out of work is an issue that needs to be addressed. Have you tried talking to him about why he feels this way or why he feels it isn’t time yet?

Of course, I personally think pushing a man into a corner might make him feel pressured or trapped but I feel he should at the very least give you some idea as to where the relationship is going. His hesitancy to even meet your friends or introduce you to his makes me wary as to how serious he thinks your relationship with him really is. After all, what good is being together when you do not know why you are still together?

I suggest talking with him but not complaining to him. Kicking the can down the road will only lead to the same issue arising again. Good luck !"
