Comedy about rage against the rich wins South Korea its first Palme d’Or

Parasite, a black comedy about a family of clever scammers from South Korea’s underclass, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Director Bong Joon-ho, 49, became the first Korean in the festival’s 72-year history to scoop the coveted award, with a film that critics said powerfully tapped into the tensions caused by the widening gap between rich and poor around the world.

“I was a little boy who was crazy about cinema since I was 12 years,” Bong said, hosting the palm-frond statuette in the air.

Spanish star Antonio Banderas captured the best actor prize for Pedro Almodovar’s hit Pain and Glory, and Belgium’s Dardenne brothers, already two-time winners of the Palme d’or, clinched the best director gong for Young Ahmed.

NEC demonstrates facial recognition system to speed up airplane boarding

New technology from NEC Corp. lets passengers board planes faster without showing their passports or boarding passes. The technology uses facial recognition and is called OneID.

NEC demonstrated OneID at its headquarters in Tokyo. A passenger used a self check-in machine to scan her passport.

Then she used a smartphone app to display a barcode. The machine read the barcode for details of her flight. It also scanned her face.

At another machine, she checked in her suitcase. This machine was equipped with facial recognition cameras.

Finally, she walked through the boarding gate without taking out her passport or boarding pass.

The technology will be used first at Narita Airport ahead of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. However, passengers can still choose to use the normal method of boarding a plane if they like.

Shoot something down「徹底的にやっつける、チャンスを潰す」
You shouldn’t shoot down your co-workers ideas during a brainstorming session.

似た表現に「dismiss(却下する)」「turn down(取り下げる、断る)」などの表現があります。
Rock the boat 「
Don’t rock the boat until the negotiations are finished.

Working on all these details, we have lost sight of the big picture.

Talking dog

A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana when he sees a sign in front of a broken down house “Talking Dog For Sale”. He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees s nice looking Labrador sitting there.

“You talk?” he says.
“Yep” The dog replies.

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog speak, he says “So, what’s your story?”

The Lab looks up and says, “Well, I discovered I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me getting from country to county, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.”

“I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running, but the getting around really tied me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a jobat the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious charactes and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. Then I got married, had a mess of puppies and now I’m retired.”

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

“Ten dollars” the guy says.

“Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?”

“Because he’s a liar. He never did any of the things”
