日本語の「グラウンド」は｢運動場、競技場｣をさしますが、その意味の英語は Sports field, field, playing fieldと言い、具体的に示す場合は、baseball field (野球場), football field (フットボール競技場)などと表します。
単数形groundの意味は「地面」で、通常 theをつけて使用します。

He is standing on the ground.
–(彼は地べたに立っています)

The ball fell on the ground.
–(ボールは地べたに落ちました)

複数形のgroundsは「建物及び敷地全体」のことを指します。以下の例文は、校舎などの建物、駐車場、運動場を含む学校の敷地全域での禁煙を表します。

Smoking is not allowed on school grounds. (学校内での禁煙は禁じられています)
